“Season of Creation: Forest Sunday”

Ezekiel 31: 3 – 7, Psalm 96: 12 – Jill A. Kirchner-Rose, MDIV, DMIN – The World Council of Churches urges all congregations (2.2 billion Christians) to participate in a special season of the church year: The Season of Creation. The Season of Creation (September 1 – October 4) is a time to renew our relationship with the Creator and all of creation as we care for our common home. During this Season of Creation, we will celebrate Forest Sunday, Ocean Sunday, and Sky Sunday. This Sunday, in particular, we will honor trees as temples and forests as living cathedrals. Mary Oliver writes, “Around me the trees stir in their leaves and call out, Stay Awhile.” Trees are extraordinary, magnificent beings. Environmentalists declare that the most important action we can take to combat global warming is “plant trees.” May we nurture the forests, care for creation, and in the words of the Psalmist,  “join the trees of the forest in singing with joy.”
